The Journey

Dear PAD readers: I am posting as a courtesy to say that PAD ended before the finish line. Some personal events have happened that, to me, broke the spirit of this blog.

Regardless of the details ~ I am Grateful for the many lessons I learned this year about myself, my feelings about photography, and more. That is priceless ~ and proves to me, it's not about the Destination, it's the Journey.

Lastly, I will let you know I have made choices as the blog creator to (a) leave the posts that were posted this year in the spirit the blog was intended  .. they are part of a Journey and they matter, and (b) to delete some recent posts that were mis-using this site for something other than what it was intended.

What do you wish for when all of your wishes have come true? I guess in that case I can wish for an iPad. (Not that that's what I wished for...)

How I feel some days. I find it rather appropriate that this shop is one of the first things I see on my drive to work.

"Happy Birthday, Latvia"
The 18th November is Latvian Independence Day - commemorating the first time they gained independence from Russia. Matt and I celebrated by creating this picture (it took several takes) and then toasting with the Riga Black Balsams that's inside the bottle. Prieka! (Cheers!)

This was waiting for me when I got home from Paris. November 3rd marked the 10-month anniversary since our first date. I told Matt that we weren't exchanging gifts, but he surprised me with this anyway! I guess I'm just a Black Magic woman :)

"Wings"
In addition to Matt's many talents, one of his new ones is making his own Buffalo Wings (which you can't really get here), AND his own homemade Blue Cheese Dressing, all of which he learned to make himself. I've never been a fan of wings, but these were gooooooood! :)

"RIP Norton Dodge"
I found out this week that Norton Dodge had passed away last weekend. If it weren't for Norton, there probably wouldn't be a Dr. Amy, nor would she be teaching Russian art in Aberdeen. Norton Dodge single-handedly saved contemporary Russian art from perishing at the hands of the Soviets. From 1956-1986, he smuggled out several thousands works of "unofficial" art - works of art that did not conform to the style of Socialist Realism, which the state decreed all arts should follow. In the 1990s, he donated his collection of 17,000 works of art - the largest collection of Soviet Nonconformist Art - to the Zimmerli Art Museum at Rutgers University, and later established a fellowship programme enabling budding young scholars (like me!) to study the collection. It was this Dodge fellowship that paid for my PhD.
I only met Norton once, and the meeting was brief and uneventful. It's strange to think how much I owe this man who I hardly even knew. I will be forever grateful for his generosity.

This book, The Ransom of Russian Art, which is a very short, quick and interesting read, essentially tells the story of the building of his collection.

My Favorite Co Pilot
We stayed at the in-law's during our power outage. I needed to drive to Milford & back to get my laptop to work from home, and doggies are not allowed to stay without us, so both doggies & Cassie took the long ride with me .. it was an adventure :) This Beagle has ridden shotgun all the way to AZ and back. I have very fond memories of him riding with me.

History
When Albert arrived, we were at a birthday party in Cheshire. I snapped this pic on the way home as we drove by Lyman Orchards - their corn maze is supposed to be open through the end of October. Just one of many crazy aspects of this storm - Corn Maze closed due to freak snow storm. Not to mention historic power outages (which, as of the 11-7-11 date of this post, are not 100% resolved) and more. One quote I remember hearing from the governor: "The last time we had a storm like this in October was never".

"Are you proud, Mom?"
Note: the caption is ME asking MY mom, as I did many times this night when I had Cassie make her own wrapping paper for a party we were going to the next day.

Organization
When I took out my "Fall decoration" tub from the shed, Cassie used it as an opportunity to arrange her shoes and some random leaves to her liking. Sometimes I wish I could see inside her little mind and how it works.
