"The Calm Before the Storm"
Exam papers and booklets are laid out just before the students are allowed to enter the room and begin their finals.

  1. What an awesome shot, Amy! I have been imagining where you positioned yourself to get this. I am so glad you are part of PAD, I really missed your eye!

  2. I am SO glad I went to a college where such barbaric practices are not followed!

I really like the pattern of the desks with the two early birds on the left but the flag keeps distracting me, for better or worse.

From what vantage point did you take this shot? ← Snooty finals language to celebrate the day :)

  3. Thanks, guys! This was taken in one of the large exam halls, from a gallery containing a smaller exam room upstairs, where I was 'invigilating' an exam (the British term for 'proctoring'). So, it's not like I had to climb any ladders!

As an invigilator, I had to be there early. While my colleague was laying out the exam papers, I happened to glance over the balcony and see this sea of tranquility - a stark contrast to the stressed and huddled masses waiting outside.

I agree, Paul, giving exams is something I struggle with. It is required as part of the curriculum, so there is no real way around it, but I do try to balance the rote memory exercise of exams with practical activities that the students can take with them after their degrees.

As for the flags, I also agree - on the one hand, distracting, on the other, kind of a nice interruption from the monotony of the hall below. This is probably the only PAD picture that I took on one shot - I only took this one photo that day. Also, I think of the flag in the foreground is an identifier - it is the university's coat of arms. And I am sure that your keen eye spotted the Union Jack in the far background :)
